Tia Tumminello
Husk Brooms is founded by Pittsburgh-based artist Tia Tumminello. Broom making came into her life organically after admiring a friend's shaker-made broom. Already interested in traditional crafts, she instantly found joy in broom making and all its various needs: handling, weaving, tension, sewing, cutting etc. Eager to create, she finds solace in production, working with her hands, and assures a quality product every time.
Having family along Lake Erie allows Tia to frequent the beaches and continue growing a driftwood collection. These beach walks of gathering materials and inspiration are woven into her broom making process. Driftwood is frequently used for broom and brush handles as it’s an active reminder to embrace nature and outdoor wonder within the home. Husk Brooms design style embraces traditional techniques with contemporary, costal elements. Each broom is handcrafted in Pittsburgh, PA.
Lake Erie Driftwood Handles
Husk Brooms uses driftwood found along the shores of Lake Erie for broom and brush handles.
The driftwood is thoroughly cleaned, sanded and lightly polished with natural wood conditioner.
Husk Brooms aims to bring nature inside the home by preserving the natural form and organic features found on each piece of driftwood.
We’re grateful to be able to carry on this traditional skill and build a business that showcases functional craft.
Locally Grown Broomcorn
Since 2023 Husk Brooms has been partnering with local farms in Pittsburgh, PA to grow broomcorn, the material used to make brooms.
