The main fiber used in broom making is called broomcorn, a type of sorghum. Broomcorn is native to Asia and grows in full sun, healthy soil. While it grows similar to corn (in tall rows) it does not produce fruit, instead puts all its energy into a seeded tassel head.
It takes roughly 50 tassel heads to make one house broom.
